About the ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam)

The ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam) is a standardized test used by many private and independent schools to evaluate student readiness for admission. It measures a student’s academic skills, reasoning ability, and preparedness for advanced coursework.

ISEE Levels & Who Takes the Test

The ISEE is offered at various levels, depending on the student’s grade:

  • Primary 2 Level: for students applying to grade 2
  • Primary 3 Level: for students applying to grade 3
  • Primary 4 Level: for students applying to grade 4
  • Lower Level: for students applying to grades 5–6
  • Middle Level: for students applying to grades 7–8
  • Upper Level: for students applying to grades 9–12

Each level assesses similar skills but tailors question difficulty to the student’s age and grade level.

ISEE Test Structure & Format

The ISEE is divided into five main sections, with timing and question counts varying slightly by level:

ISEE Testing Seasons

Students can take the ISEE up to three times per year, once per testing season:

  • Fall: August–November
  • Winter: December–March
  • Spring/Summer: April–July

Kscholastic recommends that students begin preparing at least 10–12 weeks before their target test date to allow enough time for diagnostics, targeted skill-building, and multiple full-length practice tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

We recommend a 10–12 week prep plan, with at least 1.5–2 hours of tutoring per week, plus practice between sessions. Since a significant portion of the ISEE math content is above most students’ current grade level, students often need to learn new concepts from scratch- including advanced arithmetic, algebraic reasoning, geometry, and data interpretation.

At Kscholastic, our tutors have hundreds of hours of experience helping students bridge this gap efficiently. Through targeted lessons and step-by-step instruction, we ensure that students not only master the tested material but also develop the problem-solving skills and confidence needed to perform under timed conditions.

Students applying to competitive private schools or aiming for top percentile scores often begin preparation earlier in the school year to allow more time for skill-building and multiple practice tests.

Yes — students can take the ISEE at home (online), at a testing center, or at their school, depending on registration. If you prefer highlighting, crossing out answers, and taking notes, the paper, in-person test might be your best bet. But if you’re someone who gets distracted in new environments, the online version at home might work better.

The ISEE places more emphasis on mathematical reasoning and vocabulary, while the SSAT includes more analytical reading and a verbal analogy section.

Most students start tutoring in the summer or early fall before their testing season. However, we also offer intensive short-term prep for students testing sooner.

Yes — our ISEE Prep Program includes comprehensive materials, guided practice packets, and access to diagnostic tests and reviews.

Bring and ID (if required), admission ticket, 2–3 sharpened #2 pencils, eraser, and snacks for breaks! Be sure to arrive to the testing center at least 30 minutes before the scheduled time.

Students receive a scaled score (760–940), a percentile rank, and a stanine score (1–9) for each section. The essay is not scored but is sent directly to schools for review. Kscholastic tutors help students interpret score reports and identify areas for improvement.

  • A score between 1–3 is below average, meaning your score is in the bottom 25%
  • A score between 4–6 is average and represents the middle 50% of test-takers
  • A score between 7–9 is above average, meaning your score is in the top 75%.

**You cannot superscore with the ISEE or send schools individual sections; the entire test is sent.
